A thousand years before Western science noticed
Most encyclopedias used to credit an English naturalist named Schlösser with the first scientific account of brine shrimp, in the 1750s. A rediscovered manuscript pushed that record back more than 800 years — to a lake in what is now northwestern Iran.

Estakhri describes an "aquatic dog" in Lake Urmia
The Persian geographer Abu Ishaq al-Istakhri, writing in the first half of the 10th century in his geographical work Al-Masalik wa Al-Mamalik ("Routes and Kingdoms"), described an aquatic creature living in Lake Urmia that he called an "aquatic dog." Lake Urmia's water is so salty that Artemia is essentially the only animal life it can support, which is why researchers are confident his description refers to brine shrimp rather than any other species.
An anonymous geography repeats the account
For decades, this later, anonymous Persian geographical text was treated as the earliest written mention of Artemia in Lake Urmia. Modern re-examination of manuscript sources showed that Estakhri's own account actually predates it by roughly three decades.

Until the Persian manuscripts were reassessed, this report and set of drawings of brine shrimp collected from salt pans in Lymington was considered the first unambiguous scientific record of the animal anywhere in the world.
The genus Artemia is formally named
William Elford Leach established the genus Artemia, giving the animal the formal scientific name it still carries today.
Artemia urmiana is described
Günther formally described the Lake Urmia population as its own species, Artemia urmiana — the same population Estakhri had written about roughly 950 years earlier.
Researchers reset the historical record
Asem and Eimanifar published an analysis showing that Estakhri's original 10th-century manuscript, not the 1755 date long cited in reference works, represents the first documented account of Artemia — moving the species' known written history back roughly eight centuries.
Lake Urmia has such extreme salinity that Artemia is effectively the only animal able to live in its open water — which is exactly why a medieval geographer's brief note about a strange little creature turned out to be a usable scientific record nine hundred years later.
