Water too salty for anything to eat them
Brine shrimp are almost never found in the ocean. Instead they live in inland salt lakes, evaporation pans, and man-made salterns — places where the salinity climbs so high that fish, and most of the predators and competitors that would otherwise eat Artemia, simply can't follow.
Survival by extremity, not by defense
Brine shrimp have no shell, no claws, and almost no way to fight off a predator. Instead, they've specialized in tolerating salt concentrations most animals can't — turning a hostile environment into a private refuge.

Artemia can live in water approaching the point of salt saturation — many times saltier than seawater, which runs around 3.5%.
Gills that push salt out
Specialized gill tissue actively pumps excess salt out of the body, while the gut absorbs the ions and water needed to keep cells functioning in a brine bath.
No fish, few rivals
The same salinity that would kill most animals keeps fish and many invertebrate predators out entirely, leaving the algae in these waters largely to the brine shrimp.

Not one brine shrimp, but several
"Brine shrimp" refers to the whole genus Artemia, which includes a handful of sexually reproducing species tied to particular regions, plus many parthenogenetic populations — females that produce viable offspring without a mate at all.
Artemia franciscana
The most widely farmed species, native across North and Central America and now the backbone of the global aquaculture-feed trade — including in Great Salt Lake.
Artemia urmiana
Native to Lake Urmia, Iran; the population most likely described in the 10th-century historical record, and now considered vulnerable as the lake's water level has fallen.
Artemia persimilis
Found in the far south of South America, in the salt lakes of Argentina.
Parthenogenetic populations
Across Europe, Asia, and Africa, many local populations reproduce without males at all — an entire lineage of clones adapted to one particular lake or saltern.
